Professor Lau Sau Shing, Patrick

Professor of Architecture at The University of Hong Kong. Awarded various scholarships to study Architecture in France and Canada. Graduated with Thesis Prize at the University of Manitoba, Canada in 1969 and returned to Hong Kong to teach at The University of Hong Kong in 1973 after practicing in Canada. Received also Master of Business Administration in 1988.

Besides teaching, Patrick Lau also practises in Hong Kong. Completed projects include the University of East Asia in Macau, Pui Ying Secondary School, Jockey Club Tuen Mun Home for the Aged Blind and the Ronald McDonald Home in Shatin. Received HKIA Medal of the Year for the Australian International School in 2001, HKIA Certificates of Merit for the French International School in 1984, the Hong Kong International School in 1989 and the West Island School in 1996. The design of the Hong Kong International School also received the American ACSA/AIA School Design Award in 1990.

He was awarded the Pacific Area Tourist Association Heritage & Cultural Award for the design of the Sam Tung Uk Museum in 1987, the Most Accessible Building for the disabled for the design of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for the Blind in 1989. Participated in international competitions, received Honorable Mentions for the Prince George Library and Cultural Centre Competitions in Canada. His design and research have been published widely. Also awarded the Winning Award for the HKUST Architectural Competition in 1987. Most recently won the competition for the HKIEd Jockey Club Primary School. Received the Outstanding Young Persons Award in 1984, the HKIA Outstanding Architect Award in 1991, the Artist of the Year Award in 1999 and the Silver Bauhinia Star in 2000.

Patrick Lau is involved in various community activities as well, serving as Board Member of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Council Member of St Paul's College, Member of the Town Planning Board, Member of the Architects Registration Board, Member of the Housing Authority, Member of the Election Committee, HKIA Representative to serve the Appeal Tribunal Panel (Buildings), Member of the School Building Design Committee of Education Department, Member of the ICAC Operations Review Committee, Past Chairman of the Outstanding Young Persons Association and Current President of HKIA.
