About the Conference

The 2002 Symposium cum Exhibition on Challenges and Opportunities of an Ageing Population is the first symposium of its kind in Hong Kong to engage a wide spectrum of the community, including the public and the private sectors, policy makers, academics and professionals, the young and the older generations, to discuss the far-reaching implications of population ageing.

The one-day symposium was held on Saturday, 8 June 2002 at the Convention Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

By 2021, one out of four Hong Kong people will be aged 60 or above. The phenomenon of population ageing is unprecedented and will bring about new challenges and opportunities for all of us.

The Second World Assembly on Ageing held in Madrid in April 2002 under the auspices of the United Nations calls for action to respond to the challenges and opportunities of population ageing in the 21st century and promote the development of a society for all ages. It also calls for changes in attitudes, policies and practices at all levels in all sectors so that the enormous potential of ageing in the 21st century may be fulfilled.

The Symposium aims at engaging the various sectors of the community in a process of reinventing the concept of ageing and rethinking policy, through an intergenerational, cross-sectoral and multi-disciplinary approach. The Symposium will examine population ageing from a forward looking and macro perspective, covering such topics as the framework and strategy for an ageing society, the economic and business perspectives of population ageing, public perception of ageing, changing workforce and concept of retirement, built environment, and health maintenance etc.

Why should you attend the symposium?

Whether you are a businessman, professional or academic, whether you are young or old, you will have the opportunity to listen to leaders and experienced practitioners and researchers in the fields of public service, commerce, media, education, architecture, housing, urban planning, retirement financing, human resource management, health policies and programmes, etc. on the challenges, and more importantly, the opportunities, that await you as the Hong Kong demographics, following a pattern in many other parts of the world, gradually shift towards a higher concentration of older persons.
The symposium will give you international and local perspectives on :

  • how a society should frame its institutions and strategies for population ageing
  • how businesses should re-position themselves for the emerging "silver market" (a consumer market of older persons)
  • how public perception to ageing should be shaped in tandem with changing demographics
  • how public and private institutions should adapt their human resource management practices to maximize benefits from the knowledge and experience of a mature workforce
  • how housing, town planning and other infrastructural development should be adapted to facilitate the development of a sustainable physical built environment suitable for all ages to live, work and enjoy
  • how health care services should be re-oriented to achieve a life-course approach in health maintenance
